Salt Lakes
How are Salt Lakes Formed:
Salt lakes arise when the water pouring into the lake, which contains salt or minerals, is unable to exit due to the endorheic nature of the lake (terminal). The water subsequently evaporates, leaving any dissolved salts behind and increasing the salinity of the lake, making it an ideal location for salt manufacturing. Salt lakes can be also known as Hypersaline Lakes. Salt la
Why are most Salt Lakes Pink:
This is often caused by the presence of salt-tolerant algae that produces carotenoids, such as Dunaliella salina, usually in conjunction with specific bacteria.
Dunaliella Salina:
Dunaliella salina is a type of halophile green unicellular micro-algae especially found in
hypersaline environments, such as salt lakes and salt evaporation ponds. Known for its antioxidant activity because of its ability to create large amount of carotenoids, it is responsible for most of the primary production in hypersaline environments worldwide
