Updated: Jan 14, 2022
Here is the second part of our beautiful 11 days on Kangaroo Island.
Seal Bay
Seal Bay is part of the Seal Bay Conservation Park on the southern coast of Kangaroo Island. Australian sea lions are one of the rarest species globally, with less than 12,000 left in the world. While it is the 3rd largest colony in Australia the colony consisting of 800 seal. In Australia 85% of sea lions are found in South Australia, the rest reside on the Western coast of Australia. We were able to walk on a well-built boardwalk with viewing platforms that overlook the sand dunes and the shore, where the seals were resting peacefully.
Sea Lions Facts:
Australian sea lions are classically bottom feeders looking for rays and crustaceans, while fur seals are in the mid zones.
When feeding, they travel for 70 to 100km leaving their pups alone and unprotected.
Breeding cycles happen only once every 18 months and female will only breed at the site where they were born
West Bay:
West Bay is located on Kangaroo Island's west coast and offers amazing beach views from the peak of the island's westernmost entrance. We hiked from West Bay campsite to the point's end to get a view of Paisley Islet from afar. We discovered another sea lion's paradise as we drew closer. They would play and goof around in the rock pools, some would slumber on the rocks, and the puppies would imitate the elders while investigating the surroundings, but would also call their mother if they were having difficulty.
